Pfizer (NYSE:PFE) has said that its anti-smoking drug demand has soared in Japan.

According to a report, demand for the drug Chantix, manufactured by Pfizer (NYSE:PFE) which is marketed as Champix in Japan, soared when a large number of smokers decided to quit after the Japanese government, concerned about public health and needing to raise revenues, decided to hike the tax on cigarettes in October.

Kinji Iwase, Pfizer (NYSE:PFE) spokesman in Tokyo said, “An extraordinary number of people decided to quit, and our reading of the situation was off. We expected more demand, but not to this extent.”
