IDC has reported that the struggling BlackBerry maker Research In Motion Limited (NASDAQ:RIMM) has lost its place among the top 5 global smartphone makers as its market share has falen below 6.7 percent.

The Waterloo based company lost its market share to Apple and Samsung.

The company bagged 19.9% of smartphone market share in 2009, but then slipped gradually and reached just 6.7% in the first half of 2012.

IDC analyst Kevin Restivo said, “Research In Motion Limited (NASDAQ:RIMM) is in uncharted territory now. Its newfound standing in the world is a direct result of intense competition and share losses to the likes of Apple, Samsung and other Android-powered phone sellers. Research In Motion Limited (NASDAQ:RIMM) needs new products in market soon if it’s to staunch the bleeding”
