General motors is aiming for the future. General Motors, a unit of General Electric (NYSE:GE), has plans to design electric cars and hybrid vehicles along the lines of the company’s Chevrolet Volt.

The car runs for an estimated 35 miles when fully charged (it has a 400 pound lithium ion battery); from there, the car has a 1.4 liter engine. The vehicle would be battery-powered and will have a better fuel economy than the much lauded Toyota Prius.

The launch will be in December and the company also plans to export the vehicle into foreign markets.

General Electric (NYSE:GE) has planned to supply four gas turbines for the Omotosho Phase 2 Power Plant, This will help the nation bring down its blackouts and power shortages.

General Electric (NYSE:GE) will provide four Frame 9E gas turbines, generators, accessories, technical assistance and training to the project personnel. The plant will provide more than 500 megawatts of power.

Report says that an Austin-based company named Border to Border Exploration LLC has raised $150 million from the financial services unit of General Electric (NYSE:GE). The lending will be under control of GE Energy financial services, a unit of GE (NYSE: GE). Border to Border Exploration LLC will use the funds to develop oil and gas wells in east Texas.

Border to Border CEO Matt Telfer said “The financing that GE Energy Financial Services is providing will help us accelerate our drilling program, employing operational innovations acquired while drilling over the past three years.”

A legal suit filed by a Texas man claims that Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) has violated the Electronic Communications Privacy Act of 1986. According to the case filed at the Federal court, Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) scanned the emails, which were sent by the non-gmail user, without his consent.

The complainant said that, “No consent from non-Gmail account holders is given prior to Google using the content of non-Gmail account holders for the purpose of delivering targeted ads and other related information to Gmail account holders,” the complaint, filed in US District court in Texarkana.

General Electric (NYSE:GE)has announced that they will purchase 25,000 electric vehicles for its own fleet and through its Capital Fleet Services business. General Electric (NYSE:GE) will initially purchase 12,000 GM vehicles, beginning with the Chevrolet Volt in 2011 and will add other vehicles as manufacturers expand their electric vehicle portfolios.

This commitment allows General Electric (NYSE:GE) and its partners to use a mix of electric vehicle technologies to meet their respective needs while together transforming the way energy is used for transportation.

General Electric (NYSE:GE) has collaborated with a group of venture capital firms to invest $55m in research projects working and a dozen startups on emerging grid technologies. The company will invest $200m in smart grid firms, further investments were in the pipeline over the next 12 to 18 months.

General Electric (NYSE:GE) chief executive Jeff Immelt said, “The extent to which we do invest [in smart grid] will be like this – small software companies that we can scale, partnerships, those sort of things.”
